William Wilson clears his mind, chooses a colour, and begins.
He uses intuition to guide him through each painting, trusting his subconscious to decide what tools, medium, or surface to use each step of the way. He creates art that is able to stir interest and curiosity in the audience, not unlike that produced by a psychiatrist's ink blots. It is his art's ability to push the audience to ask about its meaning, and the desire to draw conclusions as varied as the viewers themselves, that make Wilson's art attractive both mentally and physically.
William Wilson uses non-traditional tools, materials and methods in the creation of his paintings. His mixed media creations have been most influenced by artists that tend to leap headlong into their work, allowing each piece to spontaneously create itself without the restrictions of planning or the use of models and sketches to guide them.
Wilson avoids a planned outcome whenever possible, and signs off on a painting only when a piece "feels right." His methods and choice of tools provide a rare and interesting approach to painting which enables Wilson to invent and reinvent his work. His hope: to create art that is unique and exciting to both himself and the viewer. His work is often extreme in both color and proportion as he allows himself complete freedom of expression with no barriers.
Although Wilson has created paintings and prints as well as some sculptures that are icon-based or symbolic in nature, he finds such planning restrictive to the true instinctual creativity born of raw talent, which is a gift of all successful artists. He reaches for the satisfaction that he is afforded when simply letting himself go and throwing himself into his artistic endeavors with complete abandon. He believes his natural intrinsic, artistic capabilities, coupled with the training received under the instruction of such talented artists as Ted Fullerton and Stuart Oxley, give him the tools needed to invent his most engaging work.
